The Game Offers Style and Mystery, But Not Much Else
University Times (California State University Los Angeles), May 22nd, 2007
Almost a year ago I was with one of my girlfriends at an RA’s house and there was this black leather bound book with gilded pages and gold engraved lettering that at first glance looked like a Bible. Attempting to pick it up almost resulted in having my hand slapped as the male owner of the book snatched it away. “You don’t want t o read this I promise you.” He warned as he held the book back. My friend and I smiled sweetly and said “Give me the book.” He handed me a copy of The Game–Penetrating The Society of Pickup Artists by bestselling author, and writer for Rolling Stone, Neil Strauss.
Flipping though chapters entitled Select a Target, Extract to a Seduction Location and Blast Last Minute Resistance, resulted in the book being put back down. Months later the book is selling out at local Borders as are other books with titles like The Complete A$$hole’s Guide to Handling Chicks, Seduce Me-What Women Really Want, and Tucker Maxx’s I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell rising up the bestsellers list, it was time to investigate. Why do guys think these so called methods can and will work?
This book is about how with the help of a master pickup artist, who the author has dubbed Mystery, helped him go from high school loser who couldn’t get girls to adult loser who could get few girls, into a man slut. Also giving himself the alias names Style he becomes with Mystery’s help the man he was not before. It’s not that he has style, or even that Mystery is that mysterious, the nicknames associated with all the males in his book are undeserving, unexplained and confusing.
Starting out the author takes one of Mystery’s $500, four night long workshops, that essentially consist of other female challenged men following this so called master around and eventually living together in this Project Hollywood house. Even though the book is 400+ pages, around page 50 this Style character has emerged changed and is a professional one night stand womanizer. What was really learned though still seems unclear. There are the eleven steps, with sub-chapters in between that speak of some of the Master Pick Up Artist’s tips.
Tips like: The three second rule—a woman must be approached within three seconds of seeing her. Don’t hit on her immediately though, “An amateur hits on a woman right away, a pro waits eight to ten minutes.” Walk up to a group of strangers and say, “looks like the party’s over,” then turn to the girl you like and say, “if I weren’t gay you’d so be mine.” A lot of one line conversation starters smoother than, “If I could change the alphabet I’d put U and I together.”
In addition to things to say Style has to study seduction and psychology books by doctors with Ph. D’s, take lots of specialized dance classes, and learn magic tricks. He practices poses and looks male movie heart throbs have given on the big screen, and more magic tricks, lots of tricks, lots of “role playing like an actor”. The subjects are taught to carry prop bags that are “tools of the trade” Learning to dance helpful, reading books about the female mind from an educational source, great tip, wearing a purse and conversation surrounding visualizing a cube—stupid.
Style seems to be the only protégé that successfully secedes Mystery because the book is full of failed or poor hookups by the other workshop participants and very detailed accounts of Style’s conquests. The guys become obsessed with the task at hand, for example a straight A student focuses so much on his pick up craft he begins failing academically.
The book is designed for the male market and will most likely continue to be well received by it because guys like to hear about other guys getting it on with hot chicks, especially if those guys don’t look like Jude Law or Brad Pitt. Strauss’s book review on his website claims “On his journey from AFC (average frustrated chump) to PUA (pick-up artist) to PUG (pick-up guru), Strauss not only shares scores of original seduction techniques but also has unforgettable encounters with the likes of Tom Cruise, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Heidi Fleiss, and Courtney Love.
Actually it should read more like tales of his bedside manner—graphic play by plays, not real instruction on the methods. And really its his Rolling Stone work related assignments led him to non-pick up artist related encounters with the likes of Tom Cruise, Britney Spears, Heidi Fleiss, and Courtney Love. He even dares insist that the smarter girls fall even harder for their methods, unfortunately he backs this up with more tales of women he gets to make out with his friends by putting a digital camera in their face and saying, make out with my friend, and they do.
In the end though Mystery and Style both retire from the game when they finally meet the one night stand that wants to talk to them again and who they actually want to call back as well. Mystery refuses to let other members within the seduction community even meet his new sudden love and Style falls for a female member of Courtney Love’s band, wow I’m so impressed. I should have listened to that guy that told me not to read this, all I got was a half a second laugh and a headache. For $29.95 guys this book can be yours, better call your local retailer before it sells out.
